The face of the Colorado private investigator is undergoing a major transformation. With the initiation of the voluntary Colorado licensed private investigator program, for the first time in 35 years, clients who hire a private investigator will know that the person they are hiring has undergone a background screening, which will include a Colorado Bureau of Investigations check as well as an FBI background check. The first license will be issued in July of 2012 and at that time, you as a client will decide if you want to go with a licensed private investigator or an unlicensed investigator. Insurance companies, looking to conduct an insurance fraud investigation or requesting a surveillance investigation, attorneys looking to conduct background checks and individuals looking to investigate a cheating spouse or partner, will all have to make this decision. This program means that there are only a handful of states left with no licensing for private investigators. Please conduct your due diligence and know who you are hiring when you contact a Colorado private investigator.

While there are numerous databases who claim to be able to locate an individual’s employment, some of this information can be outdated. Especially in the case of a subject who changes jobs a lot, this might not be the best approach to locating employment. The most direct route to locate where an individual is working is through surveillance. Often times this can be accomplished through a brief morning surveillance, as many people work the typical 9 to 5 shift. However this is not always the case. In this day and age when we have many businesses open 24 hours, a subject could work a swing or evening shift as well. To conduct this type of investigation, we will start with the morning surveillance and if this does not lead us to an employment, we will shift the hours of surveillance, depending on the client’s information. Call us and talk to a Colorado private investigator so we can demonstrate how this can help you or your client.

What do private investigators say are the most common signs of a cheating spouse?

When you suspect infidelity in your relationship it can be difficult to determine whether or not your suspicions are valid and if so, what to do next. At PInow, we surveyed our network of trusted infidelity investigators to find out what, in their experience, are the common indications of infidelity in a relationship. The following graphic displays the six major signs of a cheating spouse, what to expect in an infidelity investigation and other statistics on infidelity and marriage.

Infidelity investigations can cost anywhere from $500 to $5,000 and last anywhere from 4 hours to 6 months. Most investigators said their investigations verify infidelity 75-100% of the time. Other statistics show that when spouses cheat, 55% of the time it’s the husband while 45% of the time it’s the wife. 30-60% of married people will cheat on their spouse according to a range that compensates for dishonesty among study participants. 74% of husbands and 68% of wives say they would have an affair if they knew they wouldn’t get caught. Wives who suspect their husbands are cheating are correct 85% of the time, while husbands who suspect their wives are cheating are correct 50% of the time. Marriage statistics were provided by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, Indiana University, Business Week, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

There is a bill going through the Colorado legislature, HB 12-1036, with regard to the Colorado Open Records Act. This bill has made it through the House of Representatives and is currently in the Senate. We feel this is a dangerous bill and could potentially restrict access to many types of law enforcement records, if passed in its current form. On March 21, 2012, we testified against this bill in the Senate Judiciary committee and because of the testimony in opposition, this bill was laid over and no vote was taken on that date. However the vote will be coming soon and we would encourage anybody with an interest in keeping the open records accessible to contact their Senators immediately to voice their concern. We will keep you updated in subsequent posts.

The recent passage of Colorado House Bill 12-1231 means that the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles will recognize the licensed private investigator on their request forms. Governor Hickenlooper just signed this into law in the past week and this should be in effect at the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles by August of 2012. This brings Colorado in line with the Federal DPPA (Driver Privacy Protection Act). With the continuing push by privacy advocates to close more and more public records nationwide, DMV record access is a subject that has been at the forefront of these discussions. Hopefully this will give the Colorado licensed private investigator a position to keep access to these records, in the event that the access issue comes up in Colorado. DMV records are a vital piece of information for any background check, insurance investigation and numerous other legal investigations.
